Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is a homeownership program that builds and repairs affordable homes in partnership with low-income families. People in need of a hand up – not a hand out - partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.  Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver has served more than 800 families throughout its 38-year history in Denver.

In addition to building new homes, Habitat also offers exterior repairs on existing homes in targeted neighborhoods.  Habitat’s Home Repair Program helps preserve affordable housing and improve the structural integrity and safety of low-income family’s homes.

Habitat Metro Denver owns and operates five ReStores, which are home improvement outlets that accept donations of materials – like furniture, appliances and cabinets – and sell these products back to the public at a significant discount. All net proceeds from the ReStores help Habitat for Humanity serve more families, and are a great community resource for residents seeking low-cost options for home building and renovation.

Havern School – Maria Cunningham, Technology Coordinator/Instructor

HAVERN SchoolHavern School provides an education program for elementary and middle school students with diagnosed learning disabilities.

With a 4:1 student-to-staff ratio, master teachers, occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists provide a comprehensive program of intervention services. Our mission is to create confident learners who will leave Havern with the skill to continue to succeed far beyond our walls.

Havern School is a nationally recognized community of professionals, parents, families, and friends working together to address the individual academic, social and emotional needs of our students.

Technology Director Maria Cunningham has been teaching at Havern for 15 years! Although working with students with learning differences is challenging, Maria loves her “kids,” teaching and supporting them while watching them grow. Maria’s passion is using technology to assist students in reaching their potential, both academically and socially. She is very involved in the community and does a lot of volunteer work with the food bank. Her favorite volunteer activity is Project Cure, where she sorts through medical supplies. She has also traveled to India with her church to help teach teachers in how to instruct students in "western" English, giving them an advantage in future employment.

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation

Downs SyndromeAs part of the Anna and John Sie Foundation, The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is a public non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to significantly improving the lives of people with Down syndrome through Research, Medical care, Education and Advocacy. Formally established in 2009, the Foundation’s primary focus is to support the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome, the first academic home in the United States committed solely to research and medical care for people with Down syndrome. Since Down syndrome is the least-funded genetic condition in the United States, fundraising and government advocacy to correct the alarming disparity of national funding for people with Down syndrome is a major goal.

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation created and organizes the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show – the single largest annual fundraiser benefitting people with Down syndrome. The Foundation organizes and funds many programs, conferences and grants, including the Dare to Play Football and Cheer Camps and the Global Down Syndrome Education Grant (awarded in conjunction with the National Down Syndrome Congress).

Our Mission, Vision and Values
Our goal is to significantly improve the lives of people with Down syndrome through research, medical care, education and advocacy. We work to educate governments, educational organizations and society in order to affect legislative and social changes so that every person with Down syndrome has an equitable chance at a satisfying life.
